3 Day Masai Mara Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Masai Mara Game Reserve

With the briefing done, it is now time for your 3 day Masai Mara safari.  As you leave the airport, sculptors of different Kenya safari animals greet you. Join into the highway and voila, you are in the central business district. You will exit the ‘big’ city headed west leaving the tall city buildings into residential houses and then farm lands. From a distance you can see the floor of the Great Rift Valley as you approach the Mau Escarpment. Winding down the wavy road past the historic Italian church, you land down into the floor of the Gregory Rift Valley. Glide through the Maasai land with many colored checked traditional shuka clad men and women going through their daily activities. Your drive will not only be scenic but interesting as the driver guide will engage you as you go.

Several hours later here you are at the Sekenani gate, the main entrance into the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve. Upon entry proceed with a short game drive to your Masai mara safari lodge. Here you will check in for a sumptuous culinary specialty. A short nap will give you a deserved rest as you prepare for the evening game drive at 1600hrs. You should be on the lookout for the ‘big five’, cheetah, warthogs, dik diks hordes of different antelope and gazelle species and birds among others. You will return to Mara Sopa Lodge in time for dinner and overnight on full board basis.

About Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most popular tourism destinations in Kenya- Africa. The reserve is located in the Great Rift Valley in primarily open grassland. Wildlife tends to be most concentrated on the reserve’s western escarpment. The Masai Mara is regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife viewing areas. The annual wildebeest’s migration alone involves over 1.5 million animals arriving in July and departing in November. There have been some 95 species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles and over 400 birds species recorded on the reserve. Nowhere in Africa is wildlife more abundant, and it is for this reason a visitor hardly misses to see the big five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino).

Day 2: Masai Mara Game Reserve

Full day will be spent in the Masai Mara game Reserve. This is the northern extension of the Serengeti –Mara ecosystem that plays host to the largest movement of big game, the ‘great migration’. This happens from late June when over one million wildebeest cross over the Mara River from Tanzania into Kenya in search of greener pastures. The return journey happens from end October when the call of nature takes them back to Serengeti and onwards to the ‘maternity’. Today you will head to the Mara River stopping at the hippo point. Watch out for the huge Nile crocodile that share the river with the hippos. On a lucky day, you will see a kill or be blessed to have a view of the elusive leopard. You can opt for two game drives or a whole day game drive and leave your Masai Mara safari lodge with picnic lunch boxes.

Day 3: Departure

The day will begin with and early breakfast that will be preceded by checkout and departure. You will enjoy a short game drive as you leave the park. End your 3 days Masai Mara safari package with a drive to Nairobi to arrive at lunch time. You will be dropped off at your Nairobi hotel or JKIA in time for your departure flight.
