Kilimanjaro Zanzibar Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha
You will be met on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Enjoy a complementary transfer to your hotel in Arusha. It is from here that you will have a briefing on your Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday. You will have your night booked on bed and breakfast.
Day 2: Arusha - Rongai village (2600m)
Wake up to an early breakfast at your hotel. Your Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday takes a drive to Rongai village. This is on Tanzania’s border with Kenya. The route takes us through Marangu and then due north. You will go through many interesting settlements.
You will register upon arrival at Rongai. It is here that you will also meet the trek staff and set off on trek. You will start out at an altitude of around 1950 meters. The pleasant trail winds its way between farmland and pine forest. You will gain height steadily as your Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday day proceeds.
You are likely to see the striking black and white colobus monkey along the way. There are also lots of elephants on the lower slopes of the north side of Kilimanjaro. After 4 hours trekking, the forest becomes thinner. You will set up camp on the edge of the moorland zone. Here you can enjoy excellent views out across the Kenyan plains.
Day 3: Rongai 1 Camp - Kikelewa Caves (3650m)
This will be a longer day’s trek on Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday. You will gain close to 1000 metres altitude. A steady walk in the morning leads to the so-called "Second Cave.” It is here that you will have lunch. At this poimt you will be able to see the peak of Kibo.
There are also the ice fields on the crater rim. You will turn off towards the jagged summit of Mawenzi aftr lunch. You will follow a trail across open moorland to a sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves. Unusual giant tree-groundsels are the dominant plant species on this part of the route.
Day 4: Kikelewa - Mawenzi (4300m)
The walking days on your Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday will become shorter. This is to enable you adjust to the demands of altitude. Today you will cross grassy slopes with expansive views.
You will the upper limit of vegetation as you head to Mawenzi Tarn. The tarn is spectacularly situated beneath the rocky multiple summits of Mawenzi. The afternoon is free for exploring the area.
Day 5: Acclimatization (4300m)
This is a day on Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday set aside for acclimatization. You will spend the day at the camp beside Mawenzi Tarn. You will go up onto the slopes of the Mawenzi volcanic cone to around 4500 meters.
The day is important not only from a safety point of view. It does also dramatically increase the group’s chances of reaching the summit.
Day 6: Mawenzi- Kibo (4750m)
This is another short day of trekking for about 5 to 6 hours. You will cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. This is to reach our overnight halt at the Kibo Hut.
This camp is directly beneath the Kibo crater wall. You will spend the afternoon in complete leisure and to rest. It is also recommended to have an early night. This is in preparation for the big day tomorrow.
Day 7: Kibo – Uhuru (5895m) - Horombo (3720m)
Day on Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday starts very early. You will set off by the light of our head-torches. You will be on a zigzag trail on rough volcanic scree. It is a tough 4 to 5 hour climb of almost 1000 metres. This will be to the crater rim at Gillmans Point (5685m).
This is a convenient point to rest and watch the sunrise on Mawenzi. A further 3-hour walk gets you to Uhuru Peak. This is the high point of all Africa. This is usually in the early morning. It is when the conditions are clear and there are panoramic views over the crater.
You can clearly see Mawenzi and Mount Meru (4565m), looking very small below you. This part of the route goes through a moonscape of volcanic rock. There are also the remnant glaciers with their impressive ice cliffs. Retrace your path around the crater rim to make a rapid descent to the Kibo Hut (4700m). You will stop for lunch here, before setting off. You will take a long descent to your camp at Horombo.
Day 8: Horombo - Marangu Gate
The day on Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday starts with a descent from Horombo. You will begin to encounter more vegetation. The trek takes you through pine forest on the lower part. You will pass the traditional first camping place on the Marangu Route.
This is at the Mandara Huts and continues our descent to the Marangu Gate (1900m). You will say goodbye to the trek crew and pick ascent certificates. Enjoy a transfer to your hotel in Arusha for an overnight stay.
Day 9: Arusha – Zanzibar
Your Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday will start with a transfer to Arusha Airport. You will be in time for the morning flight to Zanzibar Island. This is Just 40 kilometers off the Tanzanian coast. The lure of the ‘spice islands’ is legendary. Zanzibar has exotic towns, palm-fringed beaches and pristine coral reefs. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
This is situated amongst lush tropical gardens on a headland overlooking Kiwengwa Beach. The atmosphere here is intimate and tranquil. You will enjoy spectacular views across a coral reef to the azure Indian Ocean beyond. The accommodation is in individual cottages. They are built to a high standard in traditional Zanzibari style. Each of the cottages has a sea view.
There is also an open-air restaurant and bar. This is amongst the gardens with a stunning blue ocean panorama. At Kiwengwa Beach it is easy to arrange excursions. They include SCUBA diving, snorkeling, fishing, boat trips and wind surfing. Bicycles are available for hire and are an ideal way to cruise around the local area.
You can also enjoy Spice tours, sunset cruises and a visit to Zanzibar Town. You may decide to see the red colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest. All these can easily be arranged through the hotel.
Day 10 - 11: Zanzibar
Spend your days on Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday at leisure. Stroll on the beautiful fine white sands of Kiwengwa Beach. You can also stroll amongst the coconut palms of this relaxed coastal strip.
There are lots of excursion and activity options which can be arranged. They will be paid for directly with the hotel. Your accommodation and meals are on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 12: Departure
Start your day on Kilimanjaro Zanzibar holiday with breakfast. The rest of the day will be spent at leisure. This will be followed by a transfer to Zanzibar Airport in time for your departure flight.
