    Uganda and Rwanda are generally peaceful and secure countries but like any other country, one should exercise caution while in large cities. There is a real threat of pickpockets in the large cities.

    Uganda’s tourism industry was negatively affected by the Kony rebellion in the northern part of the country about 10 years ago but peace has now been fully restored and the rebels long flushed out.

    The Virunga national park has been secure and open to tourist for some time until the kidnap of british tourist and the recent killing of the Italian Ambassador to D. R. Congo.  Virunga is one of the best managed parks in Africa. It has one of the best lodges in East and Central Africa.

    The stakeholders include conservationists, local and international staff. The management of Virunga National park takes the security of visitors on a gorilla safari in Congo seriously and will go to great lengths to ensure visitors to the park are protected – including closing the park if necessary.

    Visitors to Virunga are always escorted by armed guards and wardens who are always on the lookout for poachers and other armed groups. A visitor to Virunga National Park needs to adjust and get comfortable seeing more armed personnel and guns than usual.

    The park also benefits from the presence of a large contingent of UN peacekeepers in the nearby Goma town – You will be surprised to find a large diplomatic community in the area.

    Uganda has the highest number of mountain gorillas in Africa. They can be seen in two national parks – Mgahinga and Bwindi. Uganda is also a relatively more affordable gorilla tracking destination than Rwanda.

    For over 20 years now, there has been no security incidence in Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla Park. The government has a standby military base within the parks working with armed rangers and the tourism police. All these armed personnel are well trained, equipped and motivated to keep the park and tourists safe.

    Border patrols are done by the Uganda Peoples Defense forces to ensure that no rebel elements take cover in the forests from neighboring countries. The communities living close to the park are involved in all security arrangements. Because they benefit from tourism, they will report any suspicious activities that could threaten travelers.

    1. Book with a good tour operator: Before booking your gorilla tour, ensure that your tour operator is genuine. The tour company must be registered and should have been used by other clients in the past. When making any payments, find out if they have a company bank account or an online payment system. This can only be granted to genuine companies. Avoid send money through money sending services like we.
    2. Book with a good hotel: It is important to book a good hotel which provides not only comfortable rooms but with stringent security measures in place. Your tour operator can help you select the best hotels with good security policies in place.
    3. Follow the Gorilla Trekking Rules: Mountain gorillas are very calm and peaceful unless threatened. To avoid irritating them, keep a distance of about 7 meters even when they approach you. Always stick with your group under the leadership of the park Rangers and Guides.
    4. Moving out of the group without a Ranger could put you in danger. If you leave the group, you will be exposed to an unfamiliar environment and possibly meet wild animals. The armed Rangers know how to scare away any wild animal by shooting in the air.
    5. Do not look at mountain gorillas directly in the eyes to avoid coming off as a threat. Mountain gorillas are shy primates and looking at them in the eyes for too long may be mistaken for a challenge.
    6. Speak in low tones and remain calm even when a gorilla charges at you. Simply lay low and act submissive. Shouting and loud noises may drive the primates away or begin to see you as a threat.
    7. Do not surround the gorilla group while in their midst. Allow them space to move around. As tempting as it is, do not touch a baby gorilla. The silverback could come for you assuming that you want to harm his offspring.
    8. Dress correctly to limit injury: Whereas the gorilla trekking rules are important, you also need to plan for what to wear while tracking gorillas in the African jungle. Pack sturdy hiking boots to deal with the unpredictable and slippery terrain. Long–sleeved shirts and long trousers will protect you from insects and sharp tree branches. Sunscreen, Sunglasses and a hat are excellent for protecting you against the sun. To protect yourself from the rains, pack a warm sweater and rain jackets.
    9. Request for an easier hike: If you doubt your fitness or are an elder, we recommend that you let your tour operator know about it before booking your gorilla tour. On the day of briefing, the Rangers will allocate gorilla families based on fitness among other factors.
    10. If you are unfit or an elder, insist on tracking a gorilla group that is closer to the starting point to avoid having to hike for long distances. If you think that you are fit enough, you should go for the medium or more difficult hike.

    How difficult is gorilla trekking in Rwanda

    We have had numerous clients in their 70’s trekking gorillas in Rwanda with success. But many people return very exhausted, muddy and sore if they are not used to vigorous hiking.

    Altitude sickness is not usually a problem, nor is insects. You will want a pair of gloves and clothing that protects your arms and legs from thorns and nettles. Good balance is helpful in Gorilla trekking as trails may be slippery.

    So How Difficult is Trekking Gorilla in Rwanda

    This is one of the most frequently asked questions about gorilla tracking in Rwanda. And it is also perhaps the most difficult to answer. So many variables are involved, and if they all conspire against you, you could be in for a genuinely exhausting outing (indeed on rare occasions, the guides have had to carry tourists down). On the other hand, if everything is not in your favor, the excursion will be little more demanding than the proverbial stroll in the park.

    The trek to see the gorillas has two distinct phases. The first is the hike from the closest car park to the forest and national park boundary, which usually takes 30-60 minutes depending on the speed of the party and the group they are visiting.

    The second is trek into the forest in search of the gorillas, which will usually have been located by the advance trackers by the time reach the forest edge.

    How difficult is gorilla trekking in Rwanda

    The first part of the trek is predictable, and it is usually quite flat and undemanding unless you are going to the Susa (Susa-A), which involves a longer and steeper ascent.

    The second part is more difficult to predict, as it will depend on the exact location of the gorillas on the day, and on the steepness of the terrain en route.

    Other Factors Determining the Difficulty

    Other factors in determining how tough it will be include the density of the vegetation (bending, crawling through the jungle can be tiring especially if you have to dodge vicious nettles) and whether it has rained recently, in which case everything will be muddier and quite slippery underfoot.

    At risk of stating the obvious, age and fitness levels are key factors in how difficult the hike will feel. Susa Group aside, moderately fit people under the age of 40 seldom feel any significant strain, but a high proportion of trackers are in their 50s or 60s, in which case the hike might be something tougher.

    As one trekker has previously commented in the Bradt Guide (Rwanda) – ‘We think you underestimate how strenuous the gorilla trip is. We are both 61 but fit and well, bicycle to work each day , and still we had to take regular breaks due to problems with breathing’.

    That said, while many older travelers do find the track quite demanding, it is very unusual that they are so daunted as to turn back.

    An important factor in how difficult the hike will be is which group you are allocated. As a rule, the hike to the Susa Group is the most demanding (but also most rewarding, with more than 40 gorillas on show), while the Sabinyo Group is the most reliably straightforward to reach.

    The hikes to Kwitonda, Hirwa and Group Thirteen are also usually quite undemanding, whereas the hikes to Amahoro Umubano Groups tend to be more difficult, but not as tough as the Susa Group.

    How difficult is gorilla trekking in RwandaUnfortunately, these things aren’t set in stone, and any group might be unusually demanding (or easy) to reach on a bad day. Furthermore, nobody can guarantee which group you will be allocated in advance. However the guides at Kinigi do make a conscious attempt to match individuals to the most suitable group, especially if they are asked to.

    Generally the party for the Susa (Susa-A) consists of the lean-looking under-30s, while the opposite holds true for Sabinyo party.

    Uneven Underfoot and High Altitude

    Two further factors are uneven underfoot conditions and high altitude. Most visitors to Africa live in towns and cities where roads and sidewalks are paved, and parks are serviced by neatly footpaths, so they are unused to walking on the more irregular and seasonally slippery surfaces typical of the ascent paths and forest floor.

    It will help enormously in this regard to wear strong waterproof shoes or hiking boots with a good tread and solid ankle support. Furthermore, if you think you might struggle in these conditions, there is a lot to be said for avoiding the rainy seasons, in particular March-May, when conditions can be dauntingly muddy.

    Don’t underestimate the tiring effect of altitude. The trekking takes place at elevations of 2.500-3,000m above sea level, not high enough for altitude sickness to be a concern but sufficient to knock the breath out of anybody – no matter how fit – who has just flown in from a low altitude.

    For this reason, visitors who are spending a while in Rwanda might think seriously about leaving their gorilla tracking until they’ve been in the country a week or so, and are better acclimatized.

    Most of Rwanda lies above 1,500m, and much of the country is higher – a couple of days at Nyungwe, which lies above 2,000m, would be good preparation for the Virungas.

    Likewise if you are coming from elsewhere in Africa, try to plan your itinerary so that you spend your pre-Rwanda days at medium to high altitude: for example, were you flying in from Kenya, a few days in Nairobi (2,300m) or even the Maasai Mara (1,600m) would be far better preparation than time at the coast.

    What To Expect

    Guides will generally offer you a walking stick at the start of the hike, and, even if you normally shun such props, it is worth taking up the offer to help support you on those slippery mountain paths.

    If you have luggage, hire a porter too. Once on the trail, take it easy, and don’t be afraid to ask to stop for a few minutes whenever you feel tired. Drink plenty of water and carry some quick calories – biscuits and chocolate can both be bought at supermarkets in Ruhengeri.

    The good news is that most people who track gorillas find the hike to be far less demanding than they expect, and 99% of cases, whatever exhaustion you might feel on the way up will vanish with the adrenalin charge that follows the first sighting of the silverback gorilla!

    January

    January is one of the best month to go to Rwanda on safari. It is important to note that January 1 and 2 are public holidays in Rwanda.     February

    March

    April

    June

    This marks the end of rainy season. June is the beginning of one of the best months to travel to Rwanda. The very best of rainy season and dry season intermingles during this month. You will experience light showers infrequently and the country still looks incredibly green and lush from all the rainfall in March, April, and May. For avid hikers, the ground finally hardens up enough to make trekking through Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest a little bit easier and encourages the endangered mountain gorillas in the park to come out of hiding.     July

    The dry season continues and there is a lot of reason to celebrate. July 1 and July 4 are national holidays that celebrate Independence Day and Liberation Day respectively. Massive parties, concerts including the annual Kigali Up music festival happen in July. Many people including locals and tourists alike travel around the country to take advantage of the days off. It is also peak season for tourism in Rwanda and prices are a little higher than normal. Reservations in most restaurants and hotels need to be made in advance.     August

Buses leave on time, raincoats are rarely needed, and animals in Akagera National Park gather around the remaining water sources, making August an excellent time to try your hand at lion and rhino spotting.     September

    Requirements You Need for a Rwanda Visa

    1. All those applying for Rwanda Visa should present a passport. The passport must have a validity for at least 6 months before expiry.
    2. The aapplicants must present an appropriately completed one (1) visa permit application form. You can download the Rwanda Visa permit application form here. Fill the form in your own hand writing or one that is in type.
    3. One applying for the Rwanda Visa must present two passport photos. The photos must have a white background showing both ears clearly.
    4. One must present a signed associated letter detailing the reason for your entering Rwanda.
    5. You will need to present an invitation letter together with / or confirmation of your hotel accommodation reservation.
    6. Provide a copy of your yellow fever vaccine Certificate. Note that only a copy can be submitted along with application as a requirement.
    7. For exceptional cases for applicants with no yellow fever shots a doctor’s recommendation must be processes. This is often the case with senior citizen and people whose health conditions do not permit this vaccine.
    8. There must be a proof that you made payment to the High Commission’s Bank Account. The fee is not refundable or neither is it transferable.
    9. One will need a stamped or prepaid, registered as well as self addressed envelope. This should come together with an application if it was submitted through mail. On the other hand, an applicant could organize to collect their passport through a courier.

    Rwanda Visa Exempt countries

    All the East African Community countries are Rwanda Visa Exempt. This include holders of EAC Partner states passports including Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and Uganda. They shall be issued with 6 months renewable visitors pass upon arrival at no fee.

    Rwanda Visa issued Upon arrival

    A Rwanda visa valid for up to 30 days on arrival without prior application will be issued to nationals of all African countries. Others on this list include Australia, Germany, Israel and New Zealand. Also, in this list is Sweden, United Kingdom, and United States of America. The fee for this is US $ 30 payable up on arrival.

    Holders of US Travel Document

    Applicants with the United States travel documents must obtain visas before traveling to Rwanda. Failure to obtain visas from the Embassy or online will result in refusal to board the plane to Rwanda.

    New Rwanda Visa Regime

    As of the 16th of November 2017, a new visa regime for the Republic of Rwanda was established. The Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration would like to inform the public of the following New Visa Regime:

    1. Reciprocity – Rwanda will grant visas free of charge with 90 days validity. This is to the following countries on a reciprocal basis: Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, Ghana, Indonesia, Haiti, Senegal, Seychelles and Sao Tome and Principe. This is in addition to the Democratic Republic Congo, East African Community Partner States, Mauritius, Philippines, and Singapore. This takes immediate effect.
    2. Rwanda Visa waiver for Diplomatic and Service Passports – The Government of Rwanda has entered into a Visa Waiver Agreement for holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports. The countries under this category include Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, India, Israel, Morocco and Turkey.
    3. 30 Days visa upon arrival – Citizens of all countries to get visa upon arrival without prior application. This came into effect starting the 1st of January 2018. Before that, only nationals of African countries and a few others were getting a visa upon arrival.
    4. COMESA Member States to get 90 days visa upon arrival – Citizens of COMESA member states to get 90 days visa on arrival. This is up on payment of the prescribed fee. This is provided by Article 4 of the COMESA Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, Labour, Services, Right of Establishment and Residence. Rwanda ratified the protocol on the 13th of July 2016. Currently, citizens of COMESA member states were getting 30 days on arrival as other holders of African Passports.
    5. Rwandans living abroad with dual nationality allowed to use national IDs on entry. Waive visa fee to Rwandans travelling on foreign passports in possession of a Rwandan Identity Card for countries that permit dual nationality only. Initially, Rwandans travelling on a foreign passport in possession of a valid Rwandan passport were the only ones granted a visa free on arrival.
    6. Foreign residents to use their Resident ID cards for entry. Returning residents holding valid residence permits with corresponding resident cards will be allowed to use them on entry. This include using electronic gates (Automated Passenger Clearance System) at Kigali International Airport.

     WORK PERMITS FOR RWANDA

    Most nationals are required to apply for a visa in order to enter and stay in Rwanda. You can find an overview of the different types of visas, from tourist to job seeker ones, on the website of the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration.

    As an expatriate planning on working in Rwanda, you also need to apply for a (work) permit. This is in addition to your Rwanda visa, as the latter only allows you entry into the country.

    Permits for working in Rwanda are split into a number of different categories. They are as follows; first, they are split between temporary and permanent work permits. There are various different types of permits available, depending on the reason for your stay in Rwanda. For example, there are five types of different temporary permits that describe different natures of employment:

    • A skilled worker on an occupation on demand (H1)
    • A skilled worker sponsored by an organization (H2)
    • Journalist or media (H3)
    • Semiskilled or artisan workers (H4)
    • International Organization employees (H5)

    In addition, there are many more permit categories available for different purposes, from student passes to investor or entrepreneur permits.
