Kasane
Kasane lies in a riverine woodland. This is at the meeting point of four countries. They are Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe. This Botswana tourism capital lies at the confluence of two major rivers, the Chobe and the Zambezi. It’s also the northern gateway to Chobe National Park, a perfect location to start your Botswana safari tour to Chobe National Park. Being nearer to Victoria Falls, you have an opportunity to jumping-off point for excursions to Victoria Falls. Compared to Maun, Kasane is nowhere near as large or developed. Not too long ago Kasane was a remote and forgettable small village.Its strategic location along the main tourist routes has led to rapid expansion in recent years. Six kilometres east of Kasane is tiny Kazungula. This serves as the border post between Botswana and Zimbabwe and the landing for the Kazungula Ferry between Botswana and Zambia.
Situated on the Chobe River in the northeast, Kasane is a bustling little town. This Botswana town offers trouble-free access for those on Chobe National Park Safari. There are no boundary fences between the park and the village, game such as Elephant and Hippo can frequently be seen wandering down the road and through the Kasane campsites. Kasane is the administrative centre of the Chobe District and the northern entrance to the Chobe National Park.
Attractions In and Around Kasane
Kasane also boasts an old and dignified Baobab Tree with its own story to tell. In the early twentieth century the hollowed out centre of the tree trunk served as the local prison for many years before the current brick structure behind it was built. A short drive out of Kasane takes you to a bend in the Chobe River near the Kasane Rapids. Kasane is also popular as a fishing safari destination. The gateway to Chobe National Park, Kasane is an important point of debarkation for the nearby Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia, and Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. Impressive!
Spread out along the banks of the Chobe River, Kasane presents an array of hotels, guest houses and campsites. They accommodate all those on safari to Chobe National Park. Some are splendidly situated, with wonderful views of the river and its wildlife. Often visitors opt to have a morning game drive and an afternoon boat cruise, with an afternoon game drive the following day, as this is the time of day when elephants are usually spotted.
Another option is a day trip to Victoria Falls, which is about 80 kilometres from Kasane. Kasane now boasts small shopping malls where all basic commodities can be purchased, and arts and crafts shops.
While its main attraction is the park that lies a mere 10 kilometres away, there are nevertheless attractions in and around the town.
