This was in Livingstone, Zambia near the well-known Victoria Falls. It was during the walk that he came upon a site so breathtakingly beautiful. He felt it would be a wrongdoing not to share it with others.
The view before him was the grandeur of the Batoka gorge in its entire splendor 230m deep. It embraced the swirling waters of the Zambezi River in its depths.
And so it was that in 1995 when Faan and his wife Anmarie took on the challenging. This was the task of building Taita Falcon Lodge. The site had no access road existed and with no Hardware Store around.
The owners were undeterred and went on using indigenous materials. They meticulously set about making their dream a reality and the lodge slowly took shape.
A self-taught carpenter from a nearby village was appointed to make the necessary furniture. This he did all by hand, from chopping of a suitable tree and sawing the logs. He ended up producing the finished product with the very basic of tools.
Taita Falcon Lodge has only 7 chalets. This Zambia lodge in Livingstone offers an intimate stay or an exclusive venue to smaller groups.
Each spacious chalet is en-suite with its own private garden and outdoor shower. They have bathroom with shower running hot and cold water and toilet.
The beds have a big walk in mosquito nets. The chalets are constructed of reed and stone. The three quarter walls bring the outside in and allow cooling breezes into the room.
All creature comforts are catered for in their elegantly down to earth design. Chalets are individually prepared as double, twin, triple or family rooms.
The indigenous gardens are blended with “bush zen” sand gardens. This is at the Taita Falcon Lodge entrance and chalet exteriors. There is a “green theme” around the swimming pool. There is a boma where evening winter meals are hosted around an open fire.
The large viewing deck and adjacent lounge play host to meals and pre-dinner drinks. They also provide expansive views downstream and miles beyond. Taita Falcon Lodge meals are hearty “Euro-African style” cooking. The list of facilities at Taita Falcon Lodge includes:
