Day 1: Kigali – Nyungwe Forest

Nyungwe Forest National park sprawls across the elevated ridge. This ridge divides Africa’s two largest drainage systems, the Nile and the Congo.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is, the 1,015 km² in size. This park protects East Africa’s largest tract of montane rainforest in Eastern Africa.

Nyungwe National park is a rich centre of biodiversity. The park has more than 1,050 plant species recorded. Among these are 200 varieties of orchid. animal life includes 85 mammal, 310 bird, 32 amphibian and 38 reptile species.

The main attraction here is the opportunity to track a habituated group of chimpanzees. But the park is home to a dozen other primate species. The most common is the acrobatic Ruwenzori colobus and striking L’Hoest’s monkey.

Nyungwe is also quite alluring to birders. This is because it supports all but two of the 29 Albertine Rift Endemics. These are birds that occur on the eastern rift escarpment.

Others include the dazzling great blue turaco. This is often seen in small flocks flapping across a road or forest clearing. It is also the site of East Africa’s only suspended canopy walkway.

Day 2: Nyungwe Forest – Kigali
