What to see on the 3 day Lake Mburo National Park Safari
Lake Mburo National Park harbors several species not observed elsewhere in Uganda. It is the only place in Uganda to support a population of impala (from which Kampala city derives its name).
It is also the only one of the 3 protected areas countrywide where Burchell's zebra occurs. The other two being the far less accessible Kidepo and Pian-Upe.
Other antelopes seen with ease here are topi, bushbuck, common duiker and oribi. You will also find Defassa waterbuck and Bofor reedbuck in lake Mburo National Park.
The lake and lush fringing vegetation support healthy populations of buffalo. There are warthog, bush-pig and hippopotamus.
Large herds of the majestic eland keep roaming the park. The sitatunga confines itself to the swampy areas of the park. Only two diurnal primates occur in Lake Mburo: the vervet monkey and olive baboon.
Nocturnal calls of the spotted hyena can be heard through the night. Leopard, side-striped jackal and various smaller predators are also present. Most common is the white-tailed mongoose and three other species resident in the lakes.

Detailed Lake Mburo National Park Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival - Kampala to Lake Mburo National Park
Our Uganda safari rep will meet you at your Kampala hotel. You will be briefed on this Lake Mburo National Park safari before you leave. You will exit Kampala driving west through the Baganda Kingdom administrative seat.
You will stop at the Equator to enjoy some photo moments. This is to be kept for remembrance of the awesome times in Africa. A stop at Mbarara will be necessary for some hot lunch.
You will have an opportunity to taste both local and international cuisine here. Proceed to the lake Mburo National Park. Check in on arrival at your Lake Mburo National Park accommodation. This is before you enjoy some short rest.
At 1600 hrs you will have a game drive in the evening. You should be on the lookout for zebras, topis and buffalo. There are also Eland, impala, water hogs, waterbucks.
You may also opt to enjoy a boatride on Lake Mburo on this day. You will later return to Lake Mburo safari Lodge for dinner and overnight.
About Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is a compact gem. It is located close to the highway that connects Kampala to the parks of western Uganda.
Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest of Uganda’s Savannah national parks. It is underlain by ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks. This dates back more than 500 million years.
It is home to 350 bird species as well as zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi and Defassa waterbuck. You will also find leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck here.
Together with 13 other lakes in the area, Lake Mburo forms part of a 50km-long wetland system linked by a swamp. Five of these lakes lie within the park’s borders.
Once covered by open savanna, Lake Mburo National Park now contains much woodland. This is because there are no elephants to tame the vegetation.
Day 2: Game Drive - Lake Mburo National Park
You will have the whole day in Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda. The day will start with breakfast to ready you for the day. Enjoy a morning game drive that will give you the best of wildlife in Lake Mburo National Park.
Some rest and lunch will prepare you for a walking game viewing in the evening. You may opt to close the day with a boat ride on the Lake Mburo. That is if you did not have it the day before.
Your dinner and overnight will be at Lake Mburo Safari Lodge.
Day 3: Game Drive and Departure - Lake Mburo – Kampala
Wake up to an early game in the Lake Mburo National Park. This game drive will give you a good chance of seeing hyenas that are coming back to their dens. You may also see hippos walking back to the water.
Keep an eye out for buffalo, zebra, impala and topi. This is to be followed by a return to the lodge for breakfast. Checking out of the lodge will put you on the road back to Kampala.
The drive will be through magnificent hilly country and lush cultivation. On arrival, you will be dropped off at your hotel in Kampala.
