Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is a huge attraction for inclusion in a Kenya safari holiday. The whole park is overlooked by the world-famous views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro is undoubtedly best seen at dusk or dawn. This is when low hanging clouds thin out to reveal the iced summit. Remember that this is Africa's highest mountain.
This backdrop has contributed to this park being amongst the most visited in Kenya. This is also what has brought its own drawbacks.
Years of tourism and off-road excursions have affected on the park. This making it appear rather dusty, overused and eroded. There is a program to improve access with new roads. There are much tougher stance taken against off-roading are remedying the situation.
The park is named after Lake Amboseli. This is Kenyan National Park is named, is usually an empty expanse of volcanic soil. Even during the wettest years its depth rarely exceeds two feet.
This creates a mirage of a shimmering lake making the horizon appear fluid. The parched dry lake bed is offset by the contrasting lush green vegetation in the marsh and swamp areas.
This has created by underground springs rising to the surface through the porous soil.
High doses of toxic salts from a raised water table are responsible for the decline in the number of acacias. That used to tower around the marsh area. The decline had been blamed fully on Elephants stripping the bark for food.

Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park, next to Nakuru town, was established in 1961. It started off small, only encompassing the famous lake and the surrounding mountainous vicinity.
Now it has been extended to include a large part of the savannahs. It has unusual but beautiful vegetation. The forest vegetation is covered with Euphorbia, tall cactus-like trees and acacia woodland. The forest region is a host to over 400 migratory bird species from around the world.
The park’s lake is internationally known for its lesser and Greater Flamingos. Ornithologists often describe Lake Nakuru as “the most fabulous bird spectacle in the world”.
The Lesser flamingo can be distinguished by its deep red carmine bill and pink plumage. The greater flamingo has a bill with a black tip.
The Lesser flamingos are ones that are commonly pictured in documentaries. This is because they are large in number.
The flamingos feed on algae, created from their droppings. This mixes in the warm alkaline waters, and plankton. Lake Nakuru National Park is also shared with the white pelicans. There are also the ever-snorting hippos.
Other wildlife in the Lake Nakuru National Park include Black and White rhinos. The Black rhinos have been slowly multiplying over the years, and are well-protected.
Thanks to the government of South Africa. Lake Nakuru National Park also boasts an increase in white rhinos. There are plenty of waterbuck, impalas, dik-diks, grants gazelles, lions, and leopards.
