Tsarabanjina is a real gem in the jewel box, a spectacularly lovely desert island with powder soft sand, heart-spinning sparkling waters, secret pathways, rocky coves, stupidly coloured birds, and superb snorkelling and ping. Part of the Mitsio archipelago of islands, is 70km north of Nosy Be, and about as far from anywhere as you could ever imagine.
Tsarabanjina is a tiny island of the Mitsio archipelago, located some 40 miles north of Nosy Be, off the northwestern coast of Madagascar. The island is private, and managed by the Constance Tsarabanjina, an intimate luxury resort. Surrounded by powder-soft beaches and translucent azure waters, Tsarabanjina is a perfect spot to snorkel untouched reefs, where it is usual to observe sea turtles, Madagascar clownfish and emperor angelfish in a few feet of water.
All About Tsarabanjina
It is a paradise island with no habitation apart from the lodge, which has 26 Suites pided into two areas, along the slightly wilder north beach, or wider, and longer south beach – although there is little to distinguish between the two.
North beach suites have air conditioning, and south beach suites have a system called
‘Evening Breeze’, a much more eco-friendly air conditioning system that cools just the bed, in a much less intense way within the mosquito net. This has been so popular with guests that the management are planning to replace all of the old air-con units before long.
There are three family chalets, cleverly designed to accommodate two children with their parents in comfort. Each chalet has its own sea view, and each view is spectacular. Such is the glory of this place; you can walk round and round and this pretty little island and marvel at every far seascape horizon.
The lodge has a joyful atmosphere, with smiling staff and brilliant, friendly management. Manager Henri blatantly loves every magnificent inch of the place, and sets up beach barbecues, special supper tables, picnics and excursions. You can soak up hours of idyllic privacy here, in one of the many hammocks, balconies or secret low-tide beaches, or join low-key options for the daily plan to snorkel, play volleyball or table tennis, or even – if the time is right – take a baby turtle for an ocean swim while it remains under the protection of the lodge. Fishing excursions for 2,4,6 or 8 hours are arranged at a reasonable rate, or spear fishing lessons! The catch, dogfish tuna, grouper, etc is always eaten afterwards. There is plenty to do here, or nothing at all.
The island is so spectacular that there is no surprise that those who discover it come back; guests who have had more than three Tsarabanjina holidays are commemorated in brass plaques on the bar, and there are hundreds of them! This is a place to treasure, and which will reliably delight
