Rare Wildlife and Ecosystems on the Maputo National Park Safari

Maputo Special Reserve (formerly known as Maputo Elephant Reserve) began in 1932 as a 1 040 square km nature reserve located on Maputo Bay, about 100 kilometres southeast of the capital city.

The Elephant reserve aimed to protect a small population of coastal elephants’ resident in the area and now the larger park combines lakes, wetlands, swamp forests, grasslands and mangrove forests with a coastline that lies within the Maputaland Centre of Endemism.

Much of the wildlife died out during the 1970s civil war but the animals are slowly returning. This is thanks to the merging of the small reserve with the incredible Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve into one land and marine conservation area called Maputo National Park.

This larger 1700 square km marine and terrestrial conservation area is managed by the Peace Parks and the National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC) in Mozambique.

Tourists look out for elephants, all kinds of ungulates, giraffes, warthogs, zebras and water buffalo from their cars. Be aware that a 4×4 is vital to navigate the thick sandy tracks and it is easy to get stuck in the middle of nowhere without any communication.

Day 1: ARRIVAL – MAPUTO NATURE RESERVE

Our Mozambique guide will pick you up early morning at your accommodation (05.30 AM) on this Maputo National Park Safari. While crossing the Ferry-Boat to Catembe you can enjoy a Light Breakfast.

On our way to the Reserve, the Maputo National Park Safari will pass by the Salamanga Hindu Temple and visit a local bread factory.

Day 2: MAPUTO NATURE RESERVE

Dawn breaks on your Maputo National Park Safari with an early morning game drive departing at 6:00 AM to explore the diverse habitats of this 900-square-kilometer reserve, including coastal forests, grasslands, and seasonal wetlands known locally as “Machampane.”

Your adventurous Maputo National Park Safari continues with an ocean safari aboard a specialized marine vessel, offering opportunities to spot dolphins, whales (seasonal), and observe nesting sea turtles along the 40-kilometer pristine coastline.

The afternoon of your Maputo National Park Safari features snorkeling in crystal-clear waters around coral reefs located just 2 kilometers offshore, followed by a sunset game drive focusing on the reserve’s famous elephant herds that frequently visit the beaches.

Day 3: BEACH EXPLORATION AND DEPARTURE

Your final Maputo National Park Safari Day begins with sea kayaking adventures at 7:00 AM, paddling through calm lagoons and mangrove channels in the Maputo Bay area, approximately 15 minutes from your accommodation.

The Maputo Special Reserve, in the Maputo Bay Area of Mozambique, encompasses 1,500 square kilometres of pristine coastal and inland territory. This diverse reserve is characterised by stark contrasting scenes of azure blue waters, swampy wetlands and dry grasslands. Maputo Special Reserve is one of the few places where visitors can view both whale sharks and elephants in one African safari destination.

One of the major highlights of visiting the area is seeing loggerhead and leatherback turtles nesting on the beach on the protected coast. What to See at Maputo Nature Reserve?

The reserve is most well-known for its prolific elephant and turtle populations—with over 350 elephants, and both loggerhead and leatherback turtles. There are small populations of zebra, steenbok and other antelope.

Hippos and crocodiles are also well-supported in the reserve. Additionally, there are dense populations of manta rays, dolphins, humpback whales and whale sharks. The ocean is alive with activity from large mammals.

Because of the habitat diversity, there is abundant birdlife in the area. The coast is a sanctuary for water birds such as ibis, storks, herons, cormorants and pelicans. The drier and more woodland enjoy regular sightings of rosy-throated longclaw, Rudd’s Apalis, Woodward’s’ batis, and the green coucal.

The Best Time to Go on Maputo National Park Safari

The best time to visit Mozambique for the Maputo National Park Safari is entirely dependent on what visitors would like to see. For a general safari experience, the best time to visit is from May to October, during the dry season when the bush thins out, and it’s easier to spot wildlife.

July to November is when the humpback whales arrive in the bay, and it is also the perfect time to spot dolphins and whale sharks. For safari-goers interested in observing nesting turtles, October to January is the best time to visit.
