Detailed Nyungwe Forest Budget Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali – Nyungwe Forest National Park

You will be met by our Rwanda safari rep in the morning. This will be either from your budget Kigali hotel or airport. You will be briefed on this 3 days Nyungwe forest budget safari. This is to be followed by departure.

You will be headed for the Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will have a stop at the traditional Rwanda King’s palace in Nyanza. Another stop will be at the Cultural Museum in Butare. Later on, drive past green tea fields which are scattered on the hillsides. You will go through the small wooden houses all the way to Nyungwe.

Your arrival will be in the evening where you will check into your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. Your dinner and overnight will be at Gisakura Guest House.

About Nyungwe Forest National Park

This park extends for 1,000 square kilometres across the majestic hills of southeast Rwanda. Nyungwe National Park is the largest block of montane forest in East or Central Africa. It is one of the most ancient, dating back to before the last Ice Age.

This Rwanda National Park has a unique rich centre of floral diversity. The forest has more than 200 different types of tree, and a myriad of flowering plants. They include the other-worldly giant lobelia and a host of colourful orchids.

Nyungwe is most alluring for its primates: 13 species in all. These include humankind’s closest living relative the chimpanzee. Here you will also get the handsome L’Hoest’s monkey. There are hundred-strong troops of the delightful acrobatic Angola colobus.

This is the most important ornithological site in Rwanda. Nyungwe harbours almost 300 bird species. Two dozen of these are restricted to a handful of montane forests on the Albertine Rift.

The avian highlight of Nyungwe is the great blue turaco. This is an outlandish blue, red and green bird. The bird streams from tree to tree like a procession of streamlined psychedelic turkeys.

Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Your Nyungwe forest safari day starts with an early breakfast. You will leave for briefing at 0500hrs at the park headquarters. This is followed by the Chimpanzee tracking activity within the forest.

You will be in search for the man’s closest friends. You will be accompanied by an armed Forest Ranger. There will also be guides who will show you different forest trail.

The chimpanzee trekking activity takes around 3-5 hours. You will return to the lodge for lunch and some rest. In the afternoon, you will take a guided nature walk with in the forest.

This will enable you to spot different bird species with in the forest. Look out for black and white casqued hornbill and Rwenzori Turacco. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Gisakura Guest House.

Day 3: Nyungwe Forest – Kigali

Your Nyungwe budget safari starts with an early breakfast. You will leave for Kigali arriving in the early afternoon. You will have time for a city tour that goes to Kigali Genocide Center.

You will be dropped off at your hotel in Kigali. For those flying out enjoy a transfer to the Kigali International airport. This is in time for your scheduled flight back home.
