Detailed 4 day Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali andndash; Parc Nationale Des Volcans

You will be met on arrival at the Kigali International Airport. This will be by our Rwanda safari representative. He will brief you on the 4-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey tour.

You will leave Kigali for Volcanoes National Park. Your arrival will be in time for lunch. The afternoon is left for you to enjoy at leisure. Your dinner and overnight will be at La Palme Hotel.

About Volcanoes National Park

This Rwanda National park protecting the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Mountains. Volcanoes National Park is the 160km2 in size. It is best-known as the place where Dian Fossey launched her pioneering study. This was the study of of mountain gorillas in the wild in 1966.

Volcanoes is also famous for the Oscar-nominated film Gorillas in the Mist. This film was shot on location in 1988.

Rwanda’s Volcanoes is home to a dozen habituated groups. There is a total of 96 tracking permits are issued daily. Other wildlife here includes the nimble bamboo-guzzling golden monkey.

There is an elusive population of elephant and buffalo. Their spoor often litters the forest trails. Others include giant forest hog, bushpig, bushbuck, and black-fronted duiker.

Around 200 bird species are thought to inhabit the mountains. The list that includes at least 16 Albertine Rift Endemics.

Tracking mountain gorillas is far and away the most popular tourist activity. It is possible to extend a stay with other activities such as golden monkey tracking.

You may also hike to Dian Fosseyandrsquo;s former camp at Karisoke, and hiking to four of the volcanic peaks.

Day 2: Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

Start your 4 day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey tour with an early breakfast. This will be followed by a departure to the headquarters. Here you will be briefed on the task ahead. You will be grouped into 8. This is according to the gorilla family you are trekking.

Each group will have an armed ranger and a guide. With porters, you will embark on trekking gorillas in Rwanda. This will take between 2 to 8 hours. The determinant factor is the weather, terrain and location of the gorilla family.

When you sight your gorilla family, you will have an hour with them. Later after having lunch, you will get back to the HQ. You will be transferred back to your Volcanoes safari accommodation.

Evening will be at leisure or enjoy a walk to the nearest villages. You will have your dinner and overnight at La Palme Hotel.

Day 3: Golden Monkeys Tracking

Another early start on 4 day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey tour. This will be with an early breakfast. Transfer to the park headquarters for briefing.

In smaller groups of 5s you will set off to the forest. This is to track the rare Golden monkeys. You will encounter other primate species as vervet monkeys and baboons. There are a variety of bird species and butterflies.

Your guide will help you with the identification of whatever animal you will meet. The guide will be ready to answer your questions about fauna and flora. You lunch on this day will be picnic boxes you carried from your hotel.

Return to your lodge in the afternoon. The evening will be at leisure. Your dinner and overnight will be at La Palme Hotel.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

Your 4 day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey tour starts with an early breakfast. This will be followed by checking out. You are heading back to the capital Kigali.

On arrival, you will enjoy a Kigali city tour. This takes you to Gisozi, The Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. You will also be able to visit colorful markets and craft centers. You will get to learn how people have managed to move on after the genocide. First hand narrations will help you paint a picture of what really happened.

Todayandrsquo;s lunch is on own arrangement. You will later be dropped at your hotel in Kigali. For those flying out, a transfer to the airport will do.
