About Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most popular national parks and certainly a most scenic one. Teemed with wildlife, this protected area is bounded by the high mountains of the Rwenzoris in the north, stretches along the shores of Lake Edward in the west and hides the remote area of Ishasha in the south.

The natural beauty is overwhelming and diverse: green savannah plains with small acacia and euphorbia trees are varied with sunken crater lakes and swamps, bounded by the snow-covered peaks of the Mountains of the Moon.

Not less than 57 different vegetation types have been identified, which can be summarized as the following five: forest, grassland, bushy grassland, Acacia woodland and swamp vegetation. Uganda Budget Safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park Itinerary

Day 1: KAMPALA – QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

You’ll be collected for your Uganda budget safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park from your chosen pick up point in Kampala. After briefing on the Uganda budget safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park safari, drive west through plains. You will pass by the tea plantations and passing Kibale National Park.

Keep an eye out for the groups of baboons by the road. You will reach Fort Portal town by midday for lunch. In the afternoon you will follow the Rwenzori Mountain range south stopping off at the equator and crossing into the southern hemisphere. This is en route and enter Queen Elizabeth National Park. Spend your afternoon exploring the explosion crater-lake fields in the parks northern sector.

The pools that you’ll see dotted across the region of the park are a reminder of the violent formation of the Great Rift Valley. They include massive chunks of rock were hurled out of the volcanoes creating these craters. Along the way there’s also a good chance to see a variety of wildlife such as elephants and wild game herds. This is before you head down to your camp overlooking the Kazinga Channel.

Day 2: QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

You’ll be up early to take advantage of the cooler hours when the wildlife is far more active before the heat of the day sets in. You’ll take a Uganda Wildlife Authority guide, who are experts in tracking game and are very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the savannah.

You’ll head to the Kasenyi Plains, known for their prides of lions. This is one of the prime places to find lions as well as a host of other wildlife such as warthogs, vultures and if you’re one of the lucky ones, leopards. You’ll visit the salt lake with its savannah view and craft market before heading back to the lodge for a leisurely lunch.

Its then down along the Kazinga tracks to the Mweya peninsula looking out for elephants and game herds crossing the road. This is also a good spot to find lions.

You’ll then take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel to the edge of Lake Edward. On the boat trip you will get the chance to search the riverside for elephants, buffalo, some of the many hippo pods, crocodiles and many species of bird.

If it’s clear, you may see the Blue Mountains of Congo on the horizon. Before the boat turns round, you’ll reach Kazinga fishing village, where you’ll see families living inside of the national park, going about their daily business of fishing amongst the wildlife.

It’s just a short drive back along the Kazinga Channel passing elephant herds to your lodge where, you’ll be spending the evening relaxing as the sun sets with the sounds of the wilds of the savannah echoing around you.

Day 3: QUEEN ELIZABETH N.P – KIAMPALA

You’ll be up early in the morning to drive the short distance to Kyambura Gorge. The gorge contains its own rainforest ecosystem in which you will be tracking the chimpanzees. After a briefing from your guides you’ll descend along the forest paths into the gorge to search for these illusive creatures.

If you manage to track them down you can spend an hour with the chimps. Observe their natural behavior in the wild as they feed, socialise, nurse their young, relax, patrol and display their prowess before to climb out of the gorge onto the savannah plains.

After your tracking, you’ll be taken south out of the park, stopping off for lunch with a stunning view across park with the backdrop of the Mountains of the Moon.

You’ll then continue on, passing Lake Africa, banana plantations and later, the edge of Lake Mburo NP (keep an eye out for zebras by the side of the road here). You’ll then drive north back over the equator to reach your drop off point in Kampala by early evening.
