Andasibe-Mantadia National Park combines the forests of Mantadia with the Analamazoatra Reserve. The latter is home to habituated groups of indri indri. Visitors are assured of a close sighting of this fabulous lemur.
There are nine species of lemur in the smaller Analamazaotra Reserve. Other than the indri you may also see the brown, and lesser bamboo lemurs. There are three nocturnal species: rufous mouse, greater dwarf, and eastern woolly lemurs. It has an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna, and a well-planned system of trails.
Neighbouring Mantadia is just 20 kilometres to the north. It is a vast tract of protected rainforest and has a hillier terrain. There are fewer established trails through its impressive forest.
Explorers may well be rewarded by a sighting of two more species of lemur. These are not found in Analamazaotra. They are the black-and-white ruffed lemur and the beautiful diademed sifaka.
The area claims a world record for the number of frog species. They include the brightly coloured golden mantella. Most reptiles and frogs are seen during night walks. Sighting is particularly good during the spring, summer and autumn months. This is between September to May, when nocturnal lemurs are at their most active.

Where does the Indri Indri Tour Go?
Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
The Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is divided into two distinct protected areas – the Analamazoatra Special Reserve (pronounced “Analamazotch”) and the Mantadia National Park.
The Réserve d’Analamazaotra is where most visitors come. It gets crowded on weekends, but is usually much calmer during the week. It also tends to fill up during late July and August, Madagascar’s tourist high season.
Topographically, the area is characterized by low hills covered by degraded forest and dotted with a few small, attractive lakes. The best times to visit are from September to January, and in May as the rain will be at a minimum and the park’s wildlife will be out in full force.
Indri Indri tour to this park takes you 140 kilometres east of Antananarivo. Andasibe-Mantadia National Park houses a huge rain forest which is home to numerous animal and plant species.
The climate in the park and the surrounding area is relatively cool. the average temperature is around 20°C and it rains for much of the year.
Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is estimated that 80% of the forest that makes up the park is virgin forest, untouched by human activity.
It is home to a multitude of species of lemurs, chameleons and birds. There is an incredible array of orchids, pandanus and giant ferns through which you have to find your way.
Getting There and around
Andasibe is located 40 kms east of Moramanga, almost halfway between Antananarivo and Tamatave, just off the RN2. The road is in good condition and the trip from either destination can easily be made in a matter of hours.
If travelling by taxi-brousse, I suggest booking a ticket to Moramanga then arranging a transfer from there, or, if you are coming from the East, simply hop-off as you pass the Andasibe junction and walk the last leg. Be aware that express services, like Cotisse, will not stop to unload baggage from the roof, so make sure you are travelling with hand luggage only to avoid backtracking from Moramanga.
Once you arrive at the Andasibe turn-off, it’s a further 1.5 km to the national park entrance, but only 500 meters or so to the first stretch of hotels and restaurants. If you are without a vehicle I definitely recommend choosing one of these as it’s along here that you’ll find the largest selection of places to stay and eat within walking distance of the park entrance and the Mitsinjo reserve.
A further two kilometers past the park entrance is Andasibe village, where you can also find a few budget accommodation options and the high end Andasibe Hotel. Vakona lodge is another 6 kms past the village. Mantadia park is a further 10 kms past Vakona on a very rough road.
